Rising from the devastation of two brutal wars, leaders sought a lasting peace built on partnership, prosperity, and shared purpose. Their vision became reality in March of that year when the Treaty of Rome was signed at the Palazzo dei Conservatori on Capitoline Hill, one of the most historic and storied sites in the Eternal City. It was here that the foundations of the European Union were laid.
